Katipo Project Survival Kit

Libraries

We have carried out a range of work with different libraries, both in New Zealand and overseas, from designing websites and customising OPAC interfaces through to our development of Koha, the world's first Open Source Library System. We have worked with other library system vendors (Geoweb, Bookplus, Aleph and Carl), always working in a professional and confidential manner when dealing with other systems.

Mapua Community Library

Mapua Community LibraryMapua Community Library is run by volunteers for the benefit of the local Mapua community.

Katipo updated the library's Koha installation. We've customised the OPAC to include a stunning image of the Mapua estuary. To ease administration we've set up reports and facilitated the use of Koha CMS features to allow the library to create and edit pages on the OPAC.

Horowhenua Library Trust

Horowhenua Library TrustKatipo has had a long standing relationship with the Horowhenua Library Trust, and prior to that the Horowhenua District Council. In the past we have provided network support, assisting them onto the internet, providing training and setup of public access terminals. In 1999 we undertook development of a new library management system for them, and Koha was born. Koha has since been released as open source software and is being taken up by libraries around the world. Koha is a comprehensive system, providing the library catalogue, membership records and management, acquisitions and budgeting, issues and returns, fines and till reconciliations and a stock management system. Koha won both the 3M Innovation in Libraries award and an Interactive New Zealand award in October 2000.

Most recently we have been working on redesigning the libraries' website and new Koha installation.

Rangitikei District Library

Rangitikei District LibraryThe second public library to go live with Koha, Rangitikei have been using Koha since the middle of 2005. With several branches spread out over a large area, Rangitikei needed a system that was able to work over all types of links, including rural modems. Koha fits the bill perfectly.

Wellington City Libraries

Wellington City LibrariesIn 1998, Katipo undertook the design, production and implementation of the Wellington City Libraries' web site and public access to the catalogue. The site was a full "virtual branch" where visitors could browse the library services, search the catalogue and even reserve a book, an exciting new development at the time.

In 2001/2002 the library undertook the massive project of implementing a new ILS and Katipo again provided design and development skills to get a new website ready to launch at the same time.

We have also installed the MyLibrary programme for the library, which enables the public to set up an account and develop their own "homepage" within the library site. The Library site has won numerous awards and received rave reviews, the most consistent of which come from the users themselves.

The Kea content management system is at the heart of the WCL website and staff also use WordPress blogging software to maintain blogs in various sections of the site.  WCL also use Kete for the Cuba St. Memories project.

Equal Employment Opportunities Trust

Equal Opportunities TrustKatipo host the Koha library system for EEO. We also applied the organisations branding to the software templates and imported their existing data, provided in a basic spreadsheet format.

Anyone can search the catalogue, but to borrow resources you need to be an EEO Trust Employers Group member.

UNIDO

UNIDOThe United Nations International Development Organisation provides resources to improve the living conditions of people and promote global prosperity through offering tailor-made solutions for the sustainable industrial development of developing countries and countries with economies in transition.

One of their services is a library which now uses Koha. The conversion involved an initial trip to Vienna, but development and support is provided from New Zealand via the internet.

OPUS

OpusThe OPUS corporate library is typical of many large corporate libraries. They have a very large collection of serials, journals and periodicals, issued internally via the company intranet.

Not happy with the way their current system managed these items, we worked with them to develop a new serials module for Koha that handles subscription management, routing lists and claims.

Directory of New Zealand Libraries

Directory of New Zealand LibrariesKatipo put together a design for an existing National Library database project, on behalf of the National Library of New Zealand. The design incorporates a searchable map section as well as a text search ability.

Details of libraries in a given area can be brought up by clicking on an area of the  map, or by using the text search fields on the page.
