Rangitikei Library launches new look website

3 October 2006

Members of the Katipo team were proud to join the Minister for Libraries, the Hon Judith Tizard and Rangitikei Mayor Bob Buchanan, at the launch of the new look Rangitikei website.

In part of his speech, Mayor Buchanan praised Katipo for understanding and delivering the needs of their clients. He remarked on the "ability to keep the client happy" as being a refreshing and welcome approach.

Katipo has been working with Rangitikei District Libraries for over 18 months. The library approached us to develop a new website for them following the migration from their legacy library system to the completely web based Koha open source library system,

The Rangitikei District covers a large, mainly rural community. A key goal of the project was to create a site that offers a portal to the information contained at the library to patrons at their homes. Patrons are able to search the catalogue, place reserves and renew items online, with out having to make the trip into town. Logging into Koha also gives patrons access to a large range of completely digital resources through the National Libraries EPIC service. These online resources include the Encyclopaedia Britannica Online and the Oxford English Dictionary Online.

The new look website has been designed to be compliant with the New Zealand Government Web Guidelines. Designing and building to the guidelines ensures that the site is accessbile to as wide an audience as possible.

About the Rangitikei District Library

The Rangitikei has 3 public branches in Marton, Bulls and Taihape. These are complemented by 3 community run branches in Hunterville, Mangaweka and Kawhatau.

The library has over 50, 000 items in circulation and adds 4,000 new items each year. The library was the second public library to go live with the Koha open source library system, following the lead of the Horowhenua Library Trust.

In additional to providing school holiday reading programmes, internet access and daily newspapers, the Taihape branch also serves as a Council service centre and information centre.
